What if you don’t have enough information to create your small steps?
If you can’t make your steps small enough, then it’s likely you’re missing some information. If that’s the case, you need to make liberal use of the word ‘research’ and come up with some ways to find the information or advice you need.
Turn your need for research into small steps
You might need a trip to the library, you might need to search for a mentor or coach or a training course, or one good book on the subject. Start with the most readily available (but credible) form of information, and take recommendations from people further along the way, so that if you do pay for training or resources, they’ll be the most relevant and useful.
Find people who are already doing your thing
People who are already doing the thing you want to do are a good source of information. If they are further ahead than you but not (yet?) at celeb status, then they’re more likely to respond. Plus, use your existing networks – friends of friends multiply this network exponentially. Ask if any of your friends knows someone who works in, or plays the, or has published, or teaches at, or created a etc – depending on the dream.
Summary of ‘dare to dream’:
To make ‘dare to dream’ part of your review process, follow these four steps:
- Make a dare to dream list. You can put anything on this list. It doesn’t need to be related to one of your roles or responsibilities. For example, I’ve always wanted to learn to play the guitar.
- Work out what small steps you could to take towards any or all of these dreams. For example, I could make a list of guitar teachers in my local area.
- Turn your list of small steps into an actionable to do list. This is where you get to test if they are small enough. A small step is something concrete and specific that you could do today.
- Don’t have enough information? Add ‘research’ to your list of actions and break that down into small steps, remembering there are lots of different kinds of research.
Happy dreaming. xxx
